Metal Choices at Men's Wedding Rings and Bands
At Men's Wedding Rings and Bands, we have a simply awesome selection of rings and choices of metal for you to choose from. We understand that picking out the right metal for you can be a pretty daunting task and made up this helpful chart to assist with your decision making.

As you can see, while the traditional metal choice of 14kt or 18kt gold, of course, has many wonderful attributes to it, it is also not very hypoallergenic and also only has a mild amount of surface strength. This is because gold is a very soft and malleable material and is mixed with other metals in order to make it stronger, which is indicated with the 3 1/2 stars in the purity index. 14kt gold is a 58.5% mixture of gold with the remaining portion of the mixture being other metals while 18kt gold is a 75% gold mixture. These other metals strengthen the metal and make it a little more durable, but the metals used can trigger an allergic reaction in some people with metal allergies!
Platinum and palladium on the other hand are much more pure and don't cause allergic reactions, but are much more expensive than gold. Palladium is slightly less expensive than platinum, but the two metals are very much alike only palladium is a more difficult metal to work with and thus cannot be repaired easily except by a specialist.
While not shown above, each of these options will also have different levels of maintenance. Gold can get more tricky because it depends greatly on what color and type of gold you get. Obviously, since 18kt gold has more gold in it, it will be softer and will require more maintenance with polishing than a 14kt gold ring since 14kt gold is harder because it is only comprised of 58.5% gold. White gold will also require more maintenance than yellow gold since white gold does not exist in nature. Gold is naturally yellow and white gold is made of yellow gold mixed with white alloys to whiten the yellow color. This effect is not sufficient alone to create the brilliant white color people are familiar with seeing in white metal jewelry though, so all white jewelry is further whitened with a rhodium plating that will periodically need to be reapplied to your jewelry. Platinum and palladium on the other hand are naturally white and will not need this kind of maintenance although they are a bit softer than gold and may need periodic polishing. Titanium and stainless steel are generally low on maintenance, but stainless steel is more susceptible to dings than titanium and may need constant buffing depending on how you are with your jewelry.
